Peonies are prized for their beauty and fragrance, making them a florist's favorite. This guide provides essential tips for caring for and handling peonies, from receiving them to creating stunning arrangements, ensuring their longevity, and maximizing their impact.
UPON ARRIVAL
- They traditionally arrive in bud form.
- Trim 1-2 inches of the stems at a 45° angle to improve water absorption.
- You can leave or gently remove the outer petals with brown spots. This is normal and will not affect the bloom. However, the outer petals may rapidly turn brown, particularly in white varieties, especially after opening. This is often confused with botrytis, but it is physiological and usually more prevalent late in the season. Use FloraLife® Finishing Touch spray to keep your peony blooms fresh and hydrated.
PLACE IN CLEAN WATER
- Ensure your container is sterilized to prevent bacteria and fungus.
- Place the flowers in room temperature or lukewarm water with holding/feeding solution.
- Remove any leaves below the water line to keep the water clean.
- Peonies are ethylene-sensitive at warm temperatures, so they should not be stored around ripening fruits.
- It is vital to maintain the cold chain throughout distribution and adhere to strict cleaning protocols. Storage temperature should be 34°-38°F.
PATIENCE IS THE KEY
- Peonies that arrive as tight buds will bloom within 1-2 days. Please plan your pick-up or delivery date accordingly.
A WORLD OF PEONIES
- Peonies come in many varieties with different bud shapes, such as rounded or rose-shaped.
- No matter the variety, they will open into beautiful, full blooms.
